Acne Cosmetic Skin Care
In patients with acne cosmetic skin care is of paramount importance. Many anti-acne topical preparations have a peeling effect which can cause mild to moderate irritant reactions on the facial skin. Both benzoyl peroxide and topical tretinoins can cause such skin irritation.
Hence the cleansers used to supplement the therapy should be chosen in such a way so as not to irritate the skin further more.
Acne Cosmetic Skin Care Tips:
Acne Cosmetic Skin Care Tip 1: Avoid compulsive washing. Acne comedones are not due to accumulation of dirt and there is no need for too frequent washes. Excessive washing will further irritate the skin and interfere with the treatment regimens. Wash the face with mild soap 2-3 times daily, not more than that. Take care to wash off all specks of cosmetics that you have applied before going to bed or applying a new layer. Acne Cosmetic Skin Care Tip 2: Avoid constant picking on the acne lesions. This will irritate the lesions. I always remind my acne patients that they are actually 'feeding' the pimples when they touch them too often! Leaving the pimple alone is one cosmetic treatment that costs you nothing. Acne Skin Cosmetic Care Tip 3: Avoid acne inducing cosmetics: If you have an acne prone face or you have acne lesions already, avoid oil based cleansers and moisturizers on the face. Moderate use of non greasy lubricants and water based make ups are allowed. A gradual decrease in cosmetic usage is encouraged as acne improves. This is essential to avoid recurrent flare ups. See this useful tip to find out the grease or oil content of make up cream. Acne Care Cosmetic Skin Tip 4: Proper Cleansing is essential in acne cosmetic skin care. - Avoid very hot water, harsh soaps or cleansers. This will irritate the skin more and increase the abrasive effects of anti acne preparations.
- Use only mild cleansers that will not cause excessive dryness should be used.
- Cleansers in acne containing potent sensitizers like fragrances and other additives can increase the skin dryness and irritation cause by loss of epidermal integrity and barrier function.
Acne Skin Cosmetic Care Tip 5: Proper use of moisturizers in acne cosmetic skin care.As mentioned above, after applying topical anti acne preparation, the facial skin can become dry and reddish at times. Hence a judicious use of moisturizer in the morning to help retain the hydration of the skin may be necessary. At the same time, the moisturizer should not be acne inducing one itself. Lipid free liquid formulations are a good choice for patients with acne. Their emollient and humectant properties counteract the potential drying and irritant effect of anti-acne preparations. The increase in hydration also helps in enhanced drug penetration and clinical effectiveness of the anti-acne preparations. Acne Cosmetic Skin Care Tip 6: No OTC medication should be applied without consulting your dermatologist. Many OTC applications, whether they are herbal or chemical are potentially harmful to the skin on prolonged usage. Take expert advice before you experiment with any topical preparation. You cannot afford to make your face an experimental field for the cosmetic industry!
