Acne Laser Scar Treatment

Acne laser scar treatment is a very effective acne scar treatment option. The lasers act by  removing the damaged layers of skin and tightening the skin beneath to raise the scar to the skin surface. The procedure is done under local anesthesia. The skin returns to normal in 1-2 weeks after the acne laser scar treatment.

If the scar is not very deep and fibrous, permanent result may be achieved with a single treatment. But usually, multiple treatments are necessary to achieve the desired results.

There are two main types of lasers: The ablative and non ablative lasers

  1. Ablative (removal  by erosion, melting, evaporation, or vaporization) lasers are much more invasive than non-ablative lasers. Ablative lasers are not recommended for use on darker skin colors.

Examples of ablative lasers:

  • Carbon Dioxide Laser: the infrared beam of the carbon dioxide laser may be used to tighten collagen fibers in the skin and elevate depressed scars.
  • Erbium: Yag Laser: the deep tissue penetration of a YAG laser is used to repair irregular scarring.
  1. Non ablative lasers do not remove layers of skin, but instead penetrate through the skin in an attempt to stimulate collagen growth from underneath the surface of the skin. There are several different types of non-ablative lasers. There is some controversy as to whether or not the appearance of scarring can be greatly reduced by the use of them. It is best for you to speak to your Dr. and to research the various laser treatments available to you.

Indications for acne laser scar treatment: The energy and tissue penetrating capability of lasers are put into use in treating scars.

  • YAG laser, with its deep penetrating ability is used to treat deep irregular scarring.

  • The infrared beam produced by carbon dioxide laser helps in tightening the collagen fibres in the dermis and help in elevating depressed scars.

Caution for acne laser scar treatment: The laser treatment is quite expensive and not affordable to many. The side effects are scarring, pigmentary and texture changes in the skin and secondary infection.
