Care of Normal Skin
Care of normal skin involves 3 basic steps: - Cleansing
- Toning
- Moisturizing
- Cleansing
- Normal skin requires cleansing twice a day
- Normal skin pH is 5.5 to 6.5, normal soaps have have an alkaline pH of 9 to 10. It takes around 4 hours for the body to get back to its own pH after a soap wash. Hence frequent washes are not good for healthy skin.
- Apart from soap and water, the other alternatives for cleansung are: cleansing milk, creams, lotions, foams, oils and gels.
- Abrasive cleansers containing rough granules (natural from apricot or walnut or artificial from plastic beads): People with normal skin should use this gentle scrubs once a week.
- Facial masks are used for their emollient(paraffin wax mask) and cleansing action(Fuller's earth). These may be used once in 2-3 weeks.
- Toning
- This is an optional step between cleansing and moisturizing.
- Toners are available in different concentrations of alcohol.
- Toning can be done daily for those who work outdoors. For others weekly twice toning will do.
- Moisturizing
Moisturizers are essential in trapping and retaining water within the epidermal layers to make skin soft and supple. Moisturizers are available in various forms like cold creams, nourishing creams, night creams etc. For normal skin, oil in water cream moisturizers are preferred during night and lotion during daytime.
