Cleansers in Acne

Choosing effective cleansers in acne is very important as this plays an important role in the management of acne.

  • Effective but non irritating cleansing is essential to any skincare regimen, especially in compromised skin like that of acne, eczema or rosacea.

  • Cleansers in acne containing potent sensitizers like fragrances and other additives can increase the skin dryness and irritation cause by loss of epidermal integrity and barrier function.

  • pH of the skin is also important. Cleansers in acne with a more alkaline pH damage the protective fatty layer of the skin and lead to dryness of skin. Cleansers in acne with neutral pH maintain the acid mantle of the skin and thus protect against infection and loss of barrier function.

  • Lipid free liquid formulations are a good choice for patients with damaged skin as in acne. Their emollient and humectant properties counteract the potential drying and irritant effect of anti-acne preparations.

  • The increase in hydration also helps in enhanced drug penetration and clinical effectiveness of the anti-acne preparations.

  • Also, a cleanser should rinse the skin clean, leaving little or no irritating residue. A cleanser such as Cetaphil(R) gentle skin cleanser meets this criteria.
